13.30 - 17.00 | €Free | Cultivate | Greening our Communities: An EPA Sponsored Green Communities Network Event
The Green Communities Network is a joint initiative of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the EPA and An Taisce to encourage the growth of green communities in Ireland. The objective of the network is to radically increase the numbers of individuals and communities living, working and playing in a more environmentally sustainable manner to bring about real and measurable reductions in environmental impact in areas such as waste, energy usage, water usage and carbon footprint.
But what are the hallmarks of a green community? There may already be communities in Ireland that are well on their way to being 'green' and environmentally sustainable. This half day session will bring together community and environmental initiatives from around Ireland to enquire into what it means to be a 'green community' and explore strategies for our communities, in the broadest sense, to become green, smart and sustainable.

The Green Economy: opportunity for, or threat to Ireland?

The Green Economy: opportunity for, or threat to Ireland?
Introduction: The Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland in conjunction with Limerick Institute of Technology invite ESAI members and members of the public to partake in a question and answer session on the opening night of the Environ 2010 Colloquium.
(8pm Wednesday 18th February 2010) The topic is 'The Green Economy: Opportunity for, or threat to Ireland?' This is your chance to put your questions to Trade Union representatives, sustainability experts and party politicians on an area that is likely to dominate Ireland's economic and social life in the years to come.
Panelists include: Simon Coveney TD Fine Gael, Liz McManus TD Labour, Dan Boyle Green Party Senator, Richard Douthwaite Co-Founder of the Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability (FEASTA) and Prof. Frank Convery, Chairman of the Comhar Sustainable Development Council. Dr Mark Costello, Leigh Marine Laboratory, University of Auckland, New Zealand; and EcoServe, Dublin will act as chairperson.
In these challenging times with climate change beginning to make its presence felt throughout the globe and the issue of peak oil and food security on the horizon there remain many challenges for a small, open economy like Ireland. Part of the proposed solution to these external challenges is a shift to a "greener" economy. On the face of it this sounds like a great opportunity for Ireland. The ICTU recently issued a statement to the fact that up to 40,000 jobs could be created in green industries within Ireland in areas such as energy, water, green technologies, housing etc. Ireland could eventually generate most of its electricity through new sustainable technologies; many new jobs could be created through new emerging green industries; the field of education could also be revitalised through the creation of new training and research initiatives for people within the green economy.
Already there are encouraging signs of a shift to a green economy. In education the "Green Schools" initiative is leading the way and is one of the most successful educational initiatives across the global green movement. Ireland is one of the 9 EU countries that intend to promote the expansion of renewable energy and bundle their green electricity activities in a joint high-voltage network under the North Sea. The Government also has ambitious plans to put 250,000 electric cars on the roads by 2020 and to increase the percentage of electricity generated from renewable sources to 40%. Indeed, Ireland could become an exporter of sustainable energy within 20 years.
However, the emergence of this new economy will present challenges for many sectors within the present economy. The Government will need to create an appropriate legislative and political framework for the emergence of green businesses in the form of tax breaks and appropriate policy to support green entrepreneurs and technologists. New national agencies may need to be created to oversee such important sectors as water, transport and waste. Battery recharge stations will have to be rolled out nationwide if the import and use of 250,000 electric cars is to be viable. The banking sector will have to increase its investment level (currently 1 - 2% in the area of energy) in these new green businesses.
The development of the green economy can make a significant contribution to restoring Ireland's economy by creating employment and export opportunities in green enterprises. However, will this shift to a greener economy be an opportunity to revitalise the economic climate within Ireland, or a threat? Will a new generation of long term unemployed be created as many workers within more traditional industries are left behind in a newer smarter economy? Will the cost of the new green technologies be prohibitively expensive? Will a "green bubble" emerge to take the place of the collapsed property boom? Are Irish politicians up to the challenges posed by a shift to a greener economy? Will the Government have the money to subsidise new green initiatives such as electric cars, until sufficient demand drives down prices within the global markets? Is it worth allocating substantial funding for research and development into new green technology or has Ireland already been left behind by countries such as Denmark and Germany? Can Ireland carve out a niche for itself in the global green technology market?

30-31st January - Rams Island Barge Open to Visitors
Posted on: 26/01/10
As part of the Annual World Wetlands Day (2nd Feb) Events the River Bann and
Lough Neagh Association are making their newly converted Barge JK16
Sandmartin open to visitors at Antrim's Lough Shore this coming weekend
Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st January 11a.m to 3p.m. Visitors can learn
about the barge, its history, its purpose, and its future use at Rams
Island. RBLNA volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the
barge and Rams Island.
The Rams Island Heritage Project has helped address the lack of accessible
Islands on Lough Neagh. Unlike Lough Erne Lough Neagh has very few islands
and at now two large Islands on Lough Neagh are accessible to the public
Rams Island and Coney Island). The Islands and the Lough Neagh wetlands have
a lot to offer the visitor in terms of natural and built history.
It was originally thought to provide an interpretive centre on the Island to
educate visitors but following discussions with NIEA, our own research and
because of possible environmental impacts and prohibitive costs it was
decided to use a floating facility aboard a barge moored at the Island
during the visitor season.
The barge (JK 16) an ex John Kelly coal lighter was originally used to
transport coal along the Lagan from the Belfast Coal Quays to the Gas Works
in Belfast. It was subsequently sold to the sand trade on Lough Neagh and
was used by Readymix at Toome Bay. Replaced by larger barges JK 16 was
donated to the Rams Island Heritage Project by Readymix. The barge will
become the gateway to the Island for visitors and will be used as an
informative educational tool.
After conversion in a small ceremony at the Island JK 16 will be renamed
"JK16 Sandmartin".
For the past few years we have been conducting research into the natural and
built history of Rams Island and have had a range of experts from various
fields visiting the Island to help us with our research. We have identified
in the region of two hundred different species of plants and animals on the
Island from enchanters nightshade, to garlic snails, to otters. One expert
(Roy Anderson) discovered a rare beetle living in the gravely beach at the
north end of the Island. This beetle Micrambe bimaculata is only found at
two other locations on Lough Neagh and nowhere else in Ireland. We have
researched the history of the Island with help from the local historians.
The information gathered from these researches will be available to all from
the floating interpretive centre.
The barge will be used as a Gateway for visitors to the Island not only in
the symbolic sense but physically as a platform to assist disabled access
from the ferry boat to the Island. The barge will also serve as a wet
weather shelter for visitors waiting to board the ferry. The barge will be
the recommended first port of call for visitors to learn about the various
interests the Island has to offer the visitor and also to advise visitors
about any negative impacts they could inadvertently cause to the Island
whilst visiting. Bird watchers will also be able to use the barge as a bird
watching hide. It is also hoped to use the barge as a workshop for special
interest groups (Bat groups, Fungus groups, Bird Watchers etc.)
The barge will also be the cornerstone for volunteers who come to Island to
work at the various environmental restoration projects that are planned/in
progress (native tree planting, path restoration, habitat creation, invasive
species management etc.)
Local community groups who have worked on the Island with us have indicated
an interest in participating in volunteering weekends on the Island and the barge would play a key role in these activities as a facility for volunteers
who spend a weekend working on the Island. The barge will also act as a
first aid post and wardens office.
Arriving at the Island visitors will be invited to visit the Interpretive
facility aboard the barge to learn about the natural and built heritage of
the Island in particular and the Lough Neagh Wetlands in general. This will
help to educate visitors about any possible negative environmental impacts
they could cause whilst visiting.
Rams Island is a large natural and built heritage resource site with a wide
variety of plants and wildlife. There is a round tower on the island part of
an early monastic settlement. The earliest known mention of the Island in
the form of a fleeting reference to it in the Annals of Ulster under the
year 1056, and again in the Annals of the Four Masters under the year 1121.
The earliest known name was Inis-Draicrenn, first used in the eleventh
century, and by the seventeenth century this had been anglicised to Ems
Garden (the road that leads to Sandy Bay opposite Rams Island is called
Darachrean Road).
There are the ruins of two nineteenth century houses on the Island. One was
the O'Neill's summer house and the other, which was lived in until the
nineteen thirties was the Cardwell's residence.
Rams Island is the largest island on Lough Neagh being in the region of
eighteen hectares.
River Bann and Lough Neagh Association are also organising a litter lift on
Rams Island on Saturday 6th February 11a.m to 3p.m. Litter has been brought
to the Island by the recent floods. The Island Warrior will ferry volunteers across to the Island leaving from Sandy Bay Marina near Crumlin. All are welcome including children accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will be provided on the Island. Telephone Michael Savage

by Minister for the Environment John Gormley

affecting their lives and how they are adapting to survive.
Climate Frontline is intended as a contribution to the ongoing discussions on climate change in advance of climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, next month.
It is intended to further inform policy makers, campaigners and the wider public, in the hope that sufficient and reliable climate change adaptation support is provided at COP 15 for these communities.
'Climate Frontline' has been produced by Irish NGO Self Help Africa in collaboration with Development Fund of Norway (DF) and the UK based agencies FARM-Africa, Find Your Feet and Concern Universal. For further information contact Self Help Africa at

The latest edition of Green Drinks will be held
next Thursday evening (29th October) from 6.30 to 7.30pm at the Clarion Hotel as usual. For those of you who haven't made it to one of these events, which are held regularly on the last Thursday of every second month, Green Drinks is a social networking get together for anyone interested in, or working in the field of, green issues. This will be our fourth, and probably last, Green Drinks this year and we've all met or remeet some great people during the year.
More details of this successful series of events
can be found here.
On this occasion, CEF is teaming up with Ethical Development Action (a Cork based voluntary development education group) to host a screening of

L.V. Pub on MacCurtain St to mark the International Day of Climate Action and will
start at 8pm.
The Future of Food examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world's food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.
The International Day of Climate Action is organised by
350.org (350--as in parts per million, is the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. We are currently at 385 parts per million) in advance of the negotiations between global leaders on a new climate treaty in Copenhagen this December.
We look forward to seeing some of you there.

August 2009 - Vision Boards and Talking Walls at Cool Earth, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Festival of World cultures August 2009
Posted on: 10/09/09
Cool Earth had almost 8500 visitors over the two day festival which was run in conjunction with the Festival of world cultures by Dun Laoighre-Rathdown County Council. We would like to thank DLR and the sponsors for allowing ESAI to participate in the event. It was highly enjoyable and we met loads of interesting people, from all walks of life and many corners of the world. We would also like to thank all those who participated in creating a vision for our future.
ESAI had a stall at Cool Earth with lots of materials - paper, pictures, stickers, colouring pencils, glue and of course glitter for people to create their vision on what they wanted to see on the planet.Initially, the reaction from adults was "no time" or "I'm not creative!" but when they started working on their vision of what they wanted to see on the planet it was amazing to see what they produced. The vision boards speak for themselves and it fantastic to see the individuality and creativity that we all possess if we give ourselves permission and just let go, let go on the analysis and allow our creativity to flow. There where vision boards created from all ages from 3 years of age to people in their 60's. It was also great to see boys and men getting involved and. Lots of time, energy and intention went into each piece and it was lovely to see the smiles and satisfaction generated from this simple activity and the absolute delight at receiving their laminated board. One woman said it was the best fun she had in ages and it was therapeutic and all for the princely sum of 1 euro.
The talking wall was also a huge success with the question "What can you do to make a difference to the planet?" Lots of brilliant concepts were created and it empowered many to know that they can make a difference. Looking at the abundant list of solutions was very inspiring and this will be written up in due course for the winter newsletter.
Thanks to all who took part as it was a lot of fun for us to watch and learn. It is up to us to make a difference.
Grainne O'Driscoll, ESAI

Star Trek Consultant to present latest images from the Cassini mission to Saturn
Dr Carolyn Porco is appearing in Ireland in a trip jointly organised by Armagh Planetarium, Cork's Blackrock Castle Observatory and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Dunsink Observatory as part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009. The tour will highlight the IYA2009 cornerstone She is an Astronomer.
Carolyn Porco is the leader of the Imaging Team on NASA'S Cassini mission at Saturn. Her team interprets and shares the pictures coming back from this fascinating planet, its rings and its moons. She is also the science consultant on the much anticipated new Star Trek movie, now on general release. The film's director, J.J. Abrams (of 'Alias', 'Lost', and 'Mission Impossible: III' fame), keen to create an authentic vision of space, invited the Cassini Imaging Team leader to be the science consultant on the film.
A native of New York City , her style of speaking is vivid and dynamic, seeking to entertain as well as to promote a deeper public understanding of important scientific ideas, especially the expanding frontier of contemporary science presented against the broader backdrop of human history and the history of the Universe. In her lecture, entitled "At Saturn: Tripping the Light Fantastic", Carolyn will share some of the wealth of new images from Saturn, the Jewel of the Solar System, its largest moon, Titan, and frozen Enceladus, which seems to shoot out jets of ice.
The Cassini spacecraft, launched in 1997, spent seven years travelling to Saturn arriving there in 2004. Since then it has been orbiting the planet Saturn with its rings and moons returning the most detailed images ever taken of this amazing system.
The lecture tour begins in Dunsink Observatory on Tuesday June 30th, proceeds to Blackrock Castle Observatory on Friday July 3rd and ends in Armagh Planetarium on Wednesday July 8th.

7th May 09 - Environmental Seminar Format
Posted on: 28/04/09
The Enterprise Boards of Cork City & County (West Cork, South Cork) are running this seminar in conjunction with Enterprise Ireland and Macroom E-Business Park. Business in Ireland is facing difficult times with high overheads, intense competition, currency fluctuations and global recession. While it might be perceived that environmental matters are of less importance at this time there really has never been a better opportunity to examine the potential for reducing costs and taking any advantage possible in the marketplace.
Improved management of key issues such as resource efficiency, energy efficiency, waste reduction and carbon management can lead to real bottom line savings in business costs. Despite the current economic position, the likely increased energy, fuel and waste disposal costs along with climate change will remain issues to be dealt with for many years to come. Companies should now be planning for the future to prepare themselves for these changes.
This seminar will contain presentations from a number of Government agencies and private companies and will concentrate on how business can achieve real savings and market opportunities through environmental improvements.

3/3/09 - 'Red Shrimp' parasite causes serious damage to fish stocks in Lough Ree
Posted on: 03/03/09
An infestation of parasites on Lough Ree is set to cause serious damage to both the natural ecosystem and anglers who are dependent on its fish stocks.
Shoals of "red shrimp" which can resemble a red cloud were spotted in the lake over last weekend, and the infestation was confirmed yesterday.
There is no way of knowing how the parasites came into the lake, and there is no real known method of controlling them.
Martin Mc Enroe from the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board is appealing to the public to report sightings of red "hue"' which signals the shrimp.
He says the situation will impact local anglers who wil not be allowed fish on non infected waters in the country.
Mr. McEnroe is also calling for more regulation of plants, trees and boats coming in to the country.

http://www.invasivespeciesireland.com/news/forum_09_pre-registration.asp
2. Invasive Species Ireland - The Way Forward
The Invasive Species Ireland project is a three year project and in the first two years it has established itself as a focus for invasive species work in Ireland and facilitated networking and information sharing at a level that had not happened on the island of Ireland to date. This has put in place the foundations needed for any future work. A key part of the project was to undertake a review of progress after two years and to organise a conference to include key stakeholders to share information on the findings of the contract and explore options for a way forward.
The Invasive Species Ireland project team has carried out a review of progress to date with the aims of:
- Benchmarking activity to identify gaps and needs at national and regional/local level
- Assessing the Invasive Species Ireland project against the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) principles and emerging EU strategy
- Comparing ISI against other countries to identify actions that are relevant for Ireland
- Developing recommendations and proposals for future options for invasive species management on the island of Ireland
The final summary of the review and stakeholder gathered during the conference held in Athlone can be downloaded by clicking on this link:
http://www.invasivespeciesireland.com/downloads/general_information.asp
3. Invasive Species Ireland - Stakeholder Recommendations
The steering group requested that the recommendations made during the review and conference were summarised and presented as a separate paper. The recommendations have been categorised into topics with a focus on those which are relevant to the development of the next phases of ISI.
A summary of the stakeholder recommendations can be downloaded by clicking on this link:
http://www.invasivespeciesireland.com/downloads/general_information.asp
4. Review of Invasive Alien Species Legislation and Governance
As part of Invasive Species Ireland the project team were tasked to undertake a review of legislative provisions in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The purpose of the review was to
- Provide an audit of existing legislation operating in Ireland and Northern Ireland of relevance to the control of IAS.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of this legislative in terms of its potential value in protecting the environment from the harmful effects of invasive non-native species;
- Propose legislative amendments or new provisions where necessary; and
- Clarify the governance arrangements for policy making on and regulation of IAS.
This review is now available on the Invasive Species Ireland website and can be downloaded by clicking on the following link:
http://www.invasivespeciesireland.com/downloads/general_information.asp
5. Commission presents policy options for EU strategy on invasive species
The European Commission has presented a series of policy options for developing a strategy to deal with invasive species which are threatening European biodiversity. Invasive species are a major threat to native plants and animals in Europe. One such example is the Harlequin ladybird, originally from Asia, which poses a deadly threat to native ladybirds in the UK, as well as to butterflies and other insects. Invasive species can disrupt local flora and fauna and cause considerable damage to nature and human health. They can also have significant economic impacts: controlling invasive species and repairing the damage they do is estimated to cost European economies at least €12 billion each year. Although some EU countries have legislation to protect their national biodiversity, there is no harmonised approach across the EU. The Communication puts forward a number of policy options
for a coordinated approach and measures that can be put in place immediately, including a Europe-wide early warning system to report new and emerging species.

http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/08/1890&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en
6. Galway County Council produce information leaflets on two of Ireland's Most Unwanted Invasive Species
Galway County Council through its 'People and Nature' project has produced new leaflets have with information on the control of Japanese knotweed and Gunnera. These can be accessed through the Invasive Species Ireland website by clicking on the following link:
http://www.invasivespeciesireland.com/downloads/education_and_awareness.asp
7. National Biodiversity Data Centre - National Invasive Species Database
The National Invasive Species Database has been loaded onto the Data Centre's mapping system and is now publicly available. You can view this database via the Data Centre's 'Biodiversity Maps' web page: http://maps.biodiversityireland.ie/ or alternatively, you may visit the National Invasive Species Database web site: http://invasivespecies.biodiversityireland.ie/ and go to the Species Search tab. Once you have selected your species search you can click on the static map and this will lead into the Biodiversity Maps site and show the distribution of that species.
The National Invasive Species Database is in the early stages of development and with further submission of specie records its value as a tool in early warning and management of invasive species will hopefully go from strength to strength.
8. New species ID sheets available from the GB Non-native Species Secretariat website
Identification sheets have been produced for a number of non-native species. These are available free from the homepage of the GB NNSS website and can be accessed by following this link http://www.nonnativespecies.org/.
9. Scottish Natural Heritage publishes a report on alien species and the Water Framework Directive
Using alien species forums to address problems in Scottish catchments
The project aimed to address how the WFD 'programmes of measures' may be used to help tackle the problems of water bodies failing (or likely to fail) to meet their environmental objectives by exploring practical, collaborative ways of addressing alien species issues in Scotland and by developing strategies to manage them.
This report is now available on the SNH website at:
http://www.snh.org.uk/pdfs/publications/commissioned_reports/Report%20No299.pdf
10. Species alerts
If you are out and about over the Christmas period, remember to keep an eye out for some of our most unwanted species. Remember to report all sightings to the Alien Watch page and that we are interested in sightings from not only the natural environment but also sites such as ponds, canals and gardens. Always try to record a 6 figure grid reference (http://www.invasivespeciesireland.com/sighting/gridref_guidelines.asp) and submit any photos to the website. See the Most Unwanted section of the website for more details on each of these species:
Japanese knotweed: Please keep an eye out for the distinctive brown stems of Japanese knotweed that will be visible at this time of year. Have a look on the Most Unwanted section and also download the Japanese knotweed flier produced by the project and Galway County Council for images and more information.
Muntjac deer: Please look out for this species if you are driving in County Wicklow and also have a look for tracks and signs if you are walking along forest paths. This is one of our most unwanted species. It is currently unclear if this is a number of escaped individuals or if the species is at an early stage of becoming established in Ireland. Muntjac deer have the potential to significantly change our native forest floral and faunal communities and causing a reduction or loss of many of our species including the much loved native bluebell Hyacinthoides non-scripta.
Brown hare: The brown hare is a non native species to Ireland. It is known in the wild in County Tyrone. Elsewhere in Europe, it has out competed mountain hares. The Irish hare is a sub species of the mountain hare. Please keep an eye out for this species and report all sightings. Also, if you know of anyone introducing this species, make them aware of the potential threat to our native and endemic hare.
Ruddy ducks: Birdwatchers are asked to report all their sightings of ruddy ducks to the Alien Watch page. This species threatens the endangered white-head duck in Europe and is ranked as one of our most unwanted species.

5th November 2008 - One day Conference : "Mitigating climate change, The challenges and opportunities for Forestry in Ireland"
Posted on: 15/10/08
One day Conference : "Mitigating climate change, The challenges and opportunities for Forestry in Ireland"
Date: 5th November 2008
Venue: Silver Springs Hotel, Cork
For up to date information please visit
INFF Conference Information
Climate change is widely recognised as the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today and it is well established that sustainable forestry systems can have a significant role in mitigating these changes.
Climate change will bring challenges and require adjustments to the way that forests in Ireland are managed. Newly created, and existing forests, will have to be diverse and robust enough to cope with an uncertain future. We will have to pursue a flexible form of forestry which can be modified to match the changing conditions.
The Irish Natural Forestry Foundation (INFF) is hosting a one day conference in order to stimulate debate and cooperation between all sectors involved in forestry, farming and water management and to help develop the informed policies and practices necessary to address the challenges that climate change presents.
This one day event will include speakers from Ireland and abroad and will be an opportunity to showcase the lessons learned from the INFF demonstration and education centre on the Manch Estate in West Cork.
The conference is being part funded by the Department of Environment and the Forest Service and is part of the Department of Environment Change Campaign.

A review of the Invasive Species Ireland project is currently underway and a discussion and consultation paper has been placed on our
website. (
Download Review). This consultation is a key part of the review process and is an opportunity for partners and interested individuals to identify those actions and priorities that you consider to be important. Responses to the consultation paper can be submitted electronically in person at the stakeholder meetings (see below). The outputs from the consultation and the stakeholder meetings will be collated and presented for consideration at a conference in November.
The review is quite comprehensive so even if you don't wish to make a detailed submission it would be valuable if you could respond to the relevant questions in Part 1 and let us know what you are doing. If you wish to make additional submissions or raise any issues that have not been covered in this consultation paper, you can do so by email or telephone to Cathy Maguire on 0044 (0)28 90278330 or
cathy@invasivespeciesireland.com.
Stakeholders meetings
Two stakeholder meetings are being held in early September to enable people to feed directly into the review of Invasive Species Ireland and the development of future options for invasive species management. You are encouraged to attend one of the two meetings where you will have the opportunity to express your views in person. The first meeting will be held on the 2nd of September in Lecture Theatre 1 of Queens University Belfast, Medical Biology Centre, 97 Lisburn Road, Belfast from 10 am - 1 pm. National Biodiversity Data Centre
The National Biodiversity Data Centre are nearing completion of their interactive species distribution mapping website. This will provide users with an invaluable tool in mapping not only invasive alien species but all records submitted to them. Please remember to submit your records of non native species to
www.invasivespeciesireland.com/sighting. Submit any native species dataset directly to the centre. We have had a sneak preview here at Invasive Species Ireland and eagerly await its launch in the near future.
Pond plants
Ornamental pond plants increasingly becoming established in the wild with damaging consequences as demonstrated by the Lagarosiphon major invasion of Lough Corrib. In order to assess the scale of the potential problem, better records are needed on invasive pond plant distributions. If you are out and about this summer, have a look in your local ponds in parks and gardens to see what is growing and please report it to the Alien Watch page on the website. Download the
Field Guide to help you identify some of our most unwanted invasive species.
Species alerts
If you are out and about this summer, remember to keep an eye out for some of our most unwanted species. You may encounter these species while out for a walk, fishing, boating, doing fieldwork or generally visiting the countryside. Remember to report all sightings to the Alien Watch page and that we are interested in sightings from not only the natural environment but also sites such as ponds, canals and gardens. Always try to record a 6 figure grid reference and submit any photos to the website. See the Most Unwanted section of the website for more details on each of these species,
Muntjac deer:
There have been more sightings of muntjac deer in the Wicklow area. Please look out for this species when driving and also have a look for tracks and signs if you are walking along forest paths.
Invasive mammals on islands:
if you are visiting inshore and offshore islands this summer keep your eyes peeled for invasive predatory mammals such as rats, mink and feral cats. Report all your sightings to the website.
Predatory flatworms:
Predatory flatworms may have a significant impact on the ecology of Ireland's soil. If you are gardening this summer or out in the countryside, please check for this species. Have a look under stones and sheets of plastic. Check for eggs in garden materials you are moving and remember to follow best practice quarantine procedures, as identified in the Horticulture Code of Practice, when bringing plants into your garden.
Brown hare:
The brown hare is a non native species to Ireland.
Ruddy ducks:
Birdwatchers are asked to report all their sightings of ruddy ducks to not only their usual reporting avenue but also to the Alien Watch page. This species threatens the endangered white-head duck in Europe and is ranked as one of our most unwanted species.
Chinese mitten crab:
Chinese mitten crabs have been recorded in the Waterford area. You may spot this species if you are out and about along rivers in the area. They are known to take bait from fishing lines. Report all sightings and do not return any specimens caught to the river.
Chub:
Chub are currently known in the River Inny in Ireland. If you see this species anywhere in Ireland report your sightings to the Alien Watch page.
Carp species:
The distribution of non native carp in Ireland is currently unclear. Should you catch any carp species in a river system please report it.
Zebra mussels:
This species continues to expand its range in Ireland. Keep a look out for zebra mussels on piers, docks, boats and equipment in all lake systems in Ireland. Please report your sightings even if you think it has already been recorded from the area.
Didemnum species:
This species can have significant impacts on native ecosystems. If you are out boating this summer or happen to be visiting an aquaculture installation please have a look for Didemnum species. Remember, there are look-a-like natives so try to take a photo to aid identification.
Invasive Species Photo Library
The Invasive Species Ireland project would like to invite you to submit your photographs of invasive species for inclusion in our Photo Library. The seminar programme at IWWE 2008 is hosted by ESAI in conjunction with
EnviroSkillnet.

02/02/08 - Minister Micheál Martin launches an innovative environmental skills network
The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr. Micheál Martin T.D., officially launched an innovative environmental training network, EnviroSkillnet, at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery at University College Cork on Friday, February 22nd 2008. Having successfully secured funding in excess of €600,000, from member companies and the Training Networks Programme, EnviroSkillnet plans to facilitate enterprise-led training for environmental consultants in Ireland, initially focusing on the areas of technical skills, legislation and information technology.
Commenting on the benefits of EnviroSkillnet, Dr. Shirley Gallagher, its Network Manager said "the cost of training can be incredibly high because of the specialised nature. Dedicated training is required because of the range of skills required to carry out environmental assessments as well as the need to maintain continuing professional development for environmental practitioners. We plan a diverse training programme to cover the needs of our diverse customers". Some of the training will include sea survival, identification of animal and plant groups through to noise monitoring. Tendering for courses will take place by month end.
Founding members of EnviroSkillnet identified specific areas where environmental training is required in a training gap analysis last year. Over thirty companies have already joined EnviroSkillnet. Dr. Gallagher encourages more firms to sign up to the network saying "smaller companies and sole traders in particular who find it difficult to fund training should join us and enjoy the benefits of expert led training at 20% of the cost". Skillnets funding is a government tool which enables private industry to work together to increase productivity and improve standards. The aim of Skillnets is to enhance the skills of people in Irish industry in order to support competitiveness and employability.
Other dignitaries included the President of UCC, Dr. Michael Murphy, and Skillnets CEO, Mr. Alan Nuzum. Member companies were well represented including Dr Lesley Lewis, Limosa Environmental and EnviroSkillnet Director, an expert on estuarine ecosystems and wading birds. Having recently worked on the production of biodiversity action plans (BAP) for a number of local authorities including County Cork, Lesley believes that continued training and updating of knowledge is essential to meet the demands and challenges of ecological assessment. Conor Kelleher is the secretary of EnviroSkillnet, Aardwolf Wildlife Survey and Chairperson of the Irish Wildlife Trust. Conor stated "It is important to keep abreast of new developments in one's chosen field of work and it would be better to have training for such in Ireland dealing with local issues and Irish habitats, wildlife etc." Many of the government bodies who commission environmental consultants were also represented including local authorities. Other bodies included the National Roads Authority (NRA), National Parks and Wildlife Service and Teagasc as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Universities and colleges were represented, Dr Fidelma Butler, University College Cork is the chairperson of EnviroSkillnet, having initiated project with the Network Manager, Dr Shirley Gallagher in March 2007. Her colleagues included Professor John O'Halloran and Professor Alan Dobson, Director of the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at UCC as well as the President Dr Michael Murphy. Cork and Waterford's Institutes of Technology were represented as well as specific training companies such as GPS Ireland. Other networking bodies were represented including Engineers and Cork Biznet Skillnets. There are plans to collaborate in future with EnviroSkillnet for members benefit. The current exhibition of work by Andy Warhol gave an artistic flavor to the proceedings.

EPA/ESAI Bursary 2007 Feedback
Using Modern Techniques to Refine Food Webs
My summer bursary 2007 took place in the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in Cork, where I was supervised by Dr. Mark Emmerson of the University College Cork. It was sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Food webs are, essentially, models showing which animals interact by eating each other. They have long been used by Ecologists to help simplify and clarify interactions between animals and plants. By understanding these interactions and the 'strength' of these relative interactions (how much they eat each other); important relationships can be found. An example of such a relationship would be a 'trophic cascade' - where the loss of one species leads to the extinction of other species also, who are heavily reliant on them for food! Obviously, the more accurate these food web models are, the easier it will be to predict such events occurring.

One method which is recently becoming more main-stream is that of stable isotope analysis. This analyses the chemistry of an animal's tissue, especially the levels of nitrogen and carbon. This analysis gives each animal/plant their personal chemical 'signature' - leading to knowledge of a creatures diet by measuring its chemical make up.
The project I worked on included using this stable isotope analysis to refine a previously constructed terrestrial food web. This was part of an ongoing PhD and took place in the Gearagh, a protected floodplain forest in Co. Cork. Work involved collecting, analysing and identifying samples - which were later sent off to be chemically analysed.

My thanks to the EPA for the sponsorship, Dr. Mark Emmerson for the guidance and the ERI for the use of the facilities. Also a special thanks to Orla McLoughlin and Chris Denis of the ERI for their help.
Niall Delaney, Applied Ecology Student, University College Cork.

ESAI Connemara Field Trip - Oct 07
The ESAI organized a field trip to Connemara on Friday May 25 2007; specific areas visited were Letterfrack and to its north east Leenaun.
Teagasc established several projects on its Hill Sheep Farm in Leenaun, Co. Mayo, to monitor the impact of grazing. The sites consist of upland and peatland. Ger Lynch started the day with a 90 minute walk around a hill farm near Leenane . Michael Walsh a senior researcher in teagasc also gave an overview of teagasc research work.
Ger researches with Teagasc and the objective of his study is to quantify the physical impact of hill sheep at low, medium and high levels of grazing by quantifying changes in micro soil erosion, plant cover and soil nutrient content over time. An important concern in agri-environmental management is the impact of grazing on soils and vegetation that receive no additional agricultural improvements and have a high erosion risk. Upland and peatland in western Ireland are particularly susceptible to erosion and are typically dominated by the habitats, blanket bog and wet heath. Both habitats are designated as Annex I-listed under the EU Habitats Directive and are thus recognised as important for conservation.
Methods to measure changes in micro-erosion and deformation of soil surface include rainfall detachment trays (constructed), Gerlough troughs, splash cups, micro-topographic pin profilers (designed) and reference marker pins. All the sites have been sampled for soil fertility analysis. There were no definite patterns in the initial results.
After lunch we moved onto Connemara national park for an afternoon walk with Ger O'Donnell, who described the unique flora and fauna of this beautiful landscape. Connemara National Park encompasses some 2,957 hectares of rugged quartzite and schist terrain of north Connemara, stretching from sea level at Letterfrack to some of the peaks of the Twelve Bens mountains. The landscape is mantled by blanket bog and wet heath vegetation with characteristic and varied wildlife.
Western blanket bog and heathland are the main vegetation types, and heathers including the unusual St. Dabeoc's Heath clothe many of the mountainsides. Purple Moor Grass grows in clumps in the bogs, and is responsible for the colour of the landscape throughout much of the year. Carnivorous plants such as Sundew and Butterwort trap insects with their leaves and digest them to gain nutrients, which are in short supply on the boggy land. Other common bog plants include Lousewort, Bog Cotton, Milkwort, Bog Asphodel, Bog Myrtle, and a variety of Orchids.
Birdlife in the area is varied, and includes Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Stonechats, Chaffinches, Robins and Wrens. The Kestrel is a fairly common bird of prey, whilst Sparrowhawk, Merlin and Peregrine are sometimes seen. Red Deer are currently being re-introduced, and a herd of the unique pure-bred Connemara ponies has also been established.
Connemara National Park have recently developed a walk with stunning views which winds around diamond hill. The group on completing this walk retired for refreshments in Letterfrack.

Cryptosporidium - causes, solutions & prevention, Radisson Hotel Athlone, Thursday 21st June 2007
Dear Researchers,
I will be speaking at a seminar on the 21st of June regarding Cryptosporidium and measures being used in the UK with particle counters. My presentation will show how particle counters can be used to monitor micron sized particles coming through membrane or gravity sand filters in an attempt to locate Oocysts of sizes 5-7 microns.
This is already being done in Scotland and parts of the UK. Filter efficiency is vital in keeping Crypto at bay, turbidity monitors cannot see this specific data, therefore the particle counter is used is unison with the turbidity monitor to measure lower than> 0.15 NTU+
For those who wish to attend, I will see you there.
If you require further information on the particle counter or other water/gas monitors, please e-mail tristen.preger@atiuk.com.
I look forward to seeing you at the seminar.
Regards,
Tristen Preger.

UCCRIA Consultation on Science Communication - May 07
Dear Researchers,
I am conducting a national survey of science communication as part of my work with Charlie Spillane's research team in UCC. This study examines the views of all scientists, engineers and researchers (PIs, postdocs, postgrads etc) in Ireland on current and future science communication practices in Ireland and is based on a similar survey conducted recently by the Royal Society in UK. We are conducting the survey in collaboration with the Royal Irish Academy as they are the equivalent body here in Ireland.
The study will comprise a web-based survey and telephone interviews with researchers in Ireland with the ultimate aim of providing evidence to funding bodies, universities and other research institutions on which they can base a workable system to encourage and reward researchers for their efforts to communicate science. The deadline for the completion of the survey is May 31st.
I am in the dissemination phase currently and hhave sent the survey to the various research institutes, Universities, funding agencies etc. and requested that they distribute the email invite.
